DETAILS:

Please join the Arizona Trail Association for a multi-day trail work event on January 17–18 on Passage 5 in the Santa Rita Foothills Region near Sonoita. This long-awaited project will reroute the Arizona Trail off a dirt road and onto sustainable singletrack. The project is rated moderate.

This is a frontcountry event. We will be camping near Box Canyon Road (FR 62). Participants should bring their own camping gear, water, and appropriate clothing and personal gear. ATA will provide lunches both days, dinner on Saturday evening, breakfast Sunday morning, and a variety of snacks.

This two-day project will focus on trail construction, including building new trail tread and rehabilitating sections where erosion has made the trail unusable. We’ll be using loppers, saws, McLeods, pick mattocks, rogue hoes, rakes, and spades. Additional tasks may be assigned as needed once on site.

All tools and required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) will be provided. This project is rated moderate—accessible to first-time volunteers, but physically demanding.

What to bring / wear:

  • Long sleeves and long pants
  • Sturdy, closed-toe shoes
  • Sun protection (sunscreen, sunglasses, hat or head covering)

The campsite is accessible by passenger car.

Schedule

  • Friday, January 16 (optional): Arrive in the afternoon to establish camp
  • Saturday, January 17: Trail work begins at 8:00 a.m. after making lunches and a safety talk
  • Sunday, January 18: Work wraps up around noon; break camp and depart by approximately 2:00 p.m.

Meeting location details and final instructions will be emailed to registered volunteers 3–4 days prior to the event.

If you have questions or would like more information, please contact the event host, Tasha Pontifex.
